This year had been difficult. Six months ago, James took a promotion that required him to split his time between cities, leaving me alone half the week. The dynamics of our marriage changed, and his promises to stay in touch quickly faded to short texts.
While he was gone, I handled everything — the house, my job, and Lily, our curious daughter. Then Carol, my mother-in-law, started visiting more often, offering help. At first, I appreciated it, but things took a turn when Lily asked why Grandma kept taking things from my bedroom.
When I confronted Carol, I discovered she’d been taking my belongings at James’s request. He’d been planning to leave me for someone else since April. Carol admitted to helping him, but now she regretted it.
That night, after James returned home, I confronted him with everything. Carol stood by me, revealing that I had every right to the gifts and the truth. James tried to shrug it off, but Carol’s support made it clear I wasn’t alone.
I told him I needed a good lawyer, and Carol, revealing her lawyer background, offered to help. It was time to take back control of my life.
