Amber’s Story: Fighting for a Fresh Start

I’m Amber. Not long ago, I had what seemed like the perfect life with my husband Louis and our two-year-old son, Allen. Everything felt like a fairytale until one evening when Louis suddenly said, “We rushed into things, Amber. I can’t do this anymore!” My desperate pleas for him to stay, especially for Allen’s sake, were ignored. That night, as he walked out, my world came crashing down.

In the days that followed, I struggled to support myself and take care of Allen. Within two weeks, we were evicted for unpaid rent, and Social Services took Allen away from me. Homeless and desperate, I sold almost everything I had, even my phone, just to survive. One cold evening, as I sat outside shivering, I remembered my dad’s warnings about Louis and decided to reach out to him. Determined to reconnect, I starved myself for a week to save enough money for a used cellphone. With tears in my eyes, I finally called him.

When my dad answered, his concern was immediate. He rushed to my side, and we spent the night in a cramped hotel room where I poured out my heart about the betrayal and my struggles on the streets. The very next day, he took me to an orphanage to begin the paperwork for reuniting with Allen. Soon after, we moved to New York. As fate would have it, Louis had been cheating on me with his boss’s daughter, which led to him losing his job and ending up on the streets. Although I had hit rock bottom, my father’s unwavering love and support gave me the strength to rebuild my life.
