He never knew my name—until he did. Suddenly, the most charismatic man in the office was everywhere, flashing his perfect smile and asking me out. But why now? When I discovered the reason, it shattered me.
At first, being unnoticed hurt. Eventually, I embraced it, finding an advantage in invisibility. That day, I watched Mark, the office golden boy, charm our new coworker Claire. He never noticed me—until he wanted something.
I was leading our company’s dating app project, chosen for my results despite my quiet presence. During lunch, I overheard Mark questioning my assignment. “Sara? We have a Sara?” he scoffed. But the next day, he was at my desk, suddenly interested in my name—and me.
I confronted him. “You didn’t even know I existed. What’s this really about?” He brushed it off, but I remained wary.
One evening, we got stuck in an elevator. Forced to talk, he shared his past—his dad’s abandonment and return, his insecurities hidden beneath his charm. I opened up about my mother leaving and the confidence I lacked. For once, we were real.
After that, we grew closer. I saw the real Mark—the one afraid of spiders and sentimental over movies. I kissed him first, and it felt right. Then, one day, I overheard him and Anthony.
“I told you I could win her over,” Mark said. “The project is yours,” Anthony replied.
I felt betrayed. I accepted an overseas job offer and prepared to leave. At the airport, Mark blocked my taxi, pleading for a chance. “Yes, it started as a deal, but I turned down the project. You’re the only person I can be real with.”
“More lies,” I said, but my heart hesitated.
“I’m falling for you,” he whispered.
Despite everything, I found myself stepping into his arms. “I see you, Sara. I’ll never let you feel invisible again.”
And I believed him.
