I Came Home to My Husband and His Ex Digging My Garden – What They Hid Years Ago Made Me Pale

I never imagined I’d question my husband, Martin, the way I do now. I always thought he was the perfect man.

We met two years ago, right after a painful breakup, and he quickly became a breath of fresh air. Martin was kind, attentive, and always there for me. He made me homemade chicken soup when I was sick and watched rom-coms with me. His little quirks, like stammering when nervous, were endearing.

Over time, he shared stories about his failed marriage with Janet, his ex-wife. He described her as always wanting more—money, status, material things—and how it led to their breakup. I vowed I’d never treat Martin that way, and when he proposed, I happily said yes.

But everything changed last Tuesday. After a weekend away, I came home to find Martin and Janet digging up my garden. Confused and angry, I confronted them, and Martin’s nervous stammer confirmed something was off. Janet claimed they were digging up a time capsule, but I couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong.

Later, Martin and Janet tried to explain, but I couldn’t understand why they had kept it a secret. In frustration, I gathered the items from the time capsule and threw them into a bonfire. “Burnt bridges should stay burnt,” I told Martin. I needed him to focus on our future, not his past.

When Janet left, Martin apologized, explaining he was afraid I’d think he still had feelings for her. But his actions shattered my trust. “We have a lot to work through,” I told him, “but not tonight.”

As I watched the fire burn out, I realized our relationship, like my garden, could be rebuilt—if we were willing to start fresh. Only time would tell if we could heal.
