Richard nervously drove, thinking about how Thanksgiving visits stopped after his wife’s funeral. Now, he only had weekly calls with Deidre. When he arrived at her house to surprise her for his 80th birthday, she was visibly upset. She quickly shut the door, saying she was busy with work.
Richard overheard a conversation between Deidre and two men, who threatened her over an $80,000 loan from Mr. Marco. Desperate, Richard followed the men to a club where Mr. Marco explained that Deidre’s debt was huge. To cover it, Richard agreed to help smuggle cars across the border.
During his trip, Richard ended up in a dangerous chase and nearly drowned when his car got stuck in a river. After surviving, he mortgaged his house to get the money and went to pay off the debt. At the club, he offered $80,000 plus an extra $15,000 for the car he ruined. Mr. Marco threatened Deidre, but police arrived, saving them both.
The detective later revealed the car had been full of contraband, leading to the gang’s arrest. Deidre apologized for getting into the mess, but Richard reassured her, saying she wasn’t a failure and they would get through this together.
