In my first week of marriage, I didn’t expect to face a huge bombshell. After three years of dating, Matt suddenly told me his mom would manage my paycheck. She had a “system” where 50% went to him, 25% to household expenses, and 25% for gifts. I was furious and refused to go along with it.
Instead of confronting him right away, I played along, sending my paycheck to our joint account and texting his mom that I was on board. But when I discovered she’d been overspending and borrowing money, I had proof she wasn’t the budgeting expert she claimed to be.
I confronted Matt and Linda with the evidence, including a new bank account I’d set up to protect my money. Matt was shocked, and I made it clear that he needed to choose between me and his mom’s control.
Since then, Matt’s apologized, and we’re working through the issues. My paycheck? It’s staying in my account.
