Some people confuse kindness with weakness, and my mother-in-law, Denise, was one of them. That changed last Saturday.
It started with a doorbell ringing three sharp times. I opened the door to find Denise with a smile and a brand-new fridge, delivered by two men. She called it a birthday gift, but something felt off.
As the men set it up, Denise handed me papers to sign, claiming they were warranty documents. When I read them, I saw they were a payment plan for $3,000. She’d paid the down payment and expected me to cover the rest.
Denise tried to brush it off, saying the fridge was an investment, but I knew she was trying to trick me into paying. I refused and called the store to arrange a return, realizing the purchase was under her name, not mine.
Denise was furious, but the fridge was taken back. Mark and I sat down, both shocked by her manipulation. We haven’t heard from her since. For once, the truth worked in my favor. Sometimes, saying “no” is the strongest thing you can do.
