I Asked My Neighbor to Look After My Plants While I Was Away for a Month

When I left for a month-long work trip, I trusted my neighbor Lisa to watch over my house, just as she had for years. But when I returned early, I was stunned to find a strange car in the driveway—and a family eating dinner in my kitchen.

They told me they’d rented my home through an online vacation site.

Shocked and furious, I confronted Lisa. She confessed she’d been secretly renting out my house whenever I traveled, calling it “harmless.” I was devastated. Years of friendship crumbled instantly.

I didn’t involve the police, but I did demand every penny she made. A week later, she paid me $15,000. Our friendship was over.

With that money and my savings, I bought a small apartment on the edge of the city—and turned my own house into a vacation rental, this time under my control. Bookings came quickly, and before long, the income covered my mortgage and more.

Now, I sip wine on my apartment balcony, watching the sunset and another booking roll in. Lisa still lives across the street, but we don’t speak.

She betrayed me—but she also pushed me toward something better. I didn’t just recover. I thrived.
