Kyle Greenbecker had spent a year working on an oil pipeline in Alaska, eager to return home to his wife, Lisa. They’d been together since high school, and he had never regretted marrying her at nineteen. Proud of their monogamous relationship, Kyle never imagined Lisa would doubt him.
When his plane landed, Kyle was excited to see Lisa but was surprised to find she wasn’t there. Assuming she was delayed, he headed home. As he walked in, his eyes landed on a bassinet with a baby inside, accompanied by two notes—one from Lisa, the other from an unknown person. The note read, “You had your fun, now take responsibility for your child.”
Lisa’s letter revealed that she suspected his infidelity during his business trips and had left him after finding the baby on their doorstep. She’d filed for divorce and wanted nothing more to do with him.
Shocked, Kyle found the baby was a girl, and after struggling through a diaper change with the help of YouTube, he realized he couldn’t abandon her. He named her Lily and soon found himself settling into fatherhood.
Two years later, on Lily’s second birthday, a woman arrived at Kyle’s door, claiming the child was hers. She explained that her boyfriend had signed a major contract, and she wanted Lily back to profit from it. After a tense confrontation, Kyle stood firm and was eventually summoned to family court, where the biological mother, Cherish, and her boyfriend, Burt, demanded Lily’s custody.
In court, Cherish admitted she had abandoned Lily, and the judge sided with Kyle, granting him full custody. As Lily called out for him from across the courtroom, it was clear that Kyle was the only father she needed. That night, they celebrated by catching lightning bugs in the garden, and Kyle knew that Lily was his star.
