Lisa drove slowly toward the school, glancing at Mike in the rearview mirror. He stared out the window in silence—a silence that spoke of loss and uncertainty. The town still felt unfamiliar to Lisa, but she hoped the change would help them heal after her husband’s death.
“Have a good day, sweetie! Be brave!” she called as Mike hopped out.
That afternoon, Mike returned beaming. “Mom! I made a new friend—Sophie!”
From then on, Sophie was all Mike talked about. One day, he excitedly announced she had invited him over. Lisa texted Sophie’s mom, who responded warmly—and jokingly suggested bringing wine. Lisa smiled. Maybe this was a fresh start for both of them.
But the visit brought a shock. Sophie’s mom was Alice—Lisa’s high school bully. Tension filled the room. The years hadn’t erased their history, and by the end of the visit, it was clear the animosity still lingered.
Then came a call from Mike’s teacher: Mike had allegedly been bullying Sophie. Lisa was stunned. Alice accused Lisa of being a negligent parent. Emotions flared. Lisa stormed out, furious and heartbroken.
Days later, Alice showed up at Lisa’s door—apologetic. Sophie missed Mike, and Alice admitted she’d lied out of jealousy, just like in high school. She revealed her troubled past with the man she stole from Lisa at prom and how she envied Lisa’s strength.
Tears were shed, truths shared. “Can you forgive me?” Alice asked.
Lisa stepped aside. “Come in. Let’s start with some wine.”
The past wasn’t erased, but maybe, just maybe, they could build something new.
