Weddings are meant to be joyful, but mine became unexpectedly emotional because of something my priest said at the last moment.
My dad had passed away years before, so to honor him, I carried his handkerchief in my bouquet. My stepdad, who had been my rock through everything, was set to walk me down the aisle.
But just before the ceremony began, the priest stopped us. He said, “Only biological fathers walk daughters down the aisle. It’s tradition.”
I was shocked. To me, family isn’t just biology—my stepdad was my family. After some tears, we compromised: he walked me partway, then gave my hand to my groom.
Later, when I shared this online, thousands related—many had been told their chosen family wasn’t “official” enough.
One comment said, “Family isn’t blood. It’s who shows up.”
That day taught me traditions don’t matter if they don’t leave space for love—and those who choose to be there deserve the biggest moments.
