Maria Nikitichna’s hands trembled as she stepped inside, holding two tiny bundles. Alyona, busy at the sink, turned quickly—something wasn’t right.
With a shaky voice, Maria revealed what she had discovered: a baby boy and girl, wrapped in tattered blankets. “I found them by the old well,” she whispered. The infants were cold, dirty, and clearly abandoned. No one in the village had any idea who their parents were.

“If no family comes forward, they’ll be taken to an orphanage,” Maria replied.
