We Paid for My Stepdaughter’s Honeymoon, but She Called Us ‘Cheap’ — So We Taught Her a Lesson in Respect

Life often surprises you, especially when you least expect it. I never imagined becoming a stepmother at 45, especially to someone like Brooke. When I married Gary ten years ago, I fell in love not just with him, but with the idea of family.

Brooke was thirteen then, and though we didn’t always get along, I tried my best to make her feel cared for. By the time she turned 23, she had become an ambitious, sometimes spoiled young woman. Gary and I supported her in everything—from college tuition to her dream wedding.

We spared no expense for her and Mason’s wedding, choosing an expensive vineyard venue. Afterward, we planned a dream honeymoon for them in the Dominican Republic. But things took an unexpected turn after they arrived.

The morning after they arrived, Brooke called, upset. She complained about the villa we had booked, criticizing its size and the distance to the beach. Gary was furious, but I suggested a plan to show her gratitude was a two-way street.

I called the villa management, downgrading their stay to a much simpler room with no private pool or ocean view, all while making sure Brooke would know about the change. When she found out, she called in a panic, demanding we fix it. I calmly explained it was her idea of “cheap,” and perhaps she would learn to appreciate what she had.

Gary also added his piece, telling her she needed a reality check. After a tense week, Brooke finally apologized. She realized how much effort we had put into everything and admitted she had been ungrateful.

Gary and I were relieved, knowing she had learned an important lesson. It took a wake-up call, but sometimes that’s what people need, even our kids.
