Brandon and Mary were deeply in love and married shortly after college. In the beginning, everything seemed perfect. Brandon adored Mary and would never refuse her anything. When Mary announced she was pregnant, Brandon was ecstatic. But over time, he began to overthink things.
His colleagues jokingly told him that his life would be over once the baby arrived, implying he would be stuck changing diapers and sacrificing everything. Comments like “My wife got so big” and “I have a giant elephant waiting for me at home” fueled his anxiety.
Brandon became increasingly stressed about the pregnancy, eventually deciding to convince Mary to terminate it. When he confronted her, Mary was shocked and tried to reassure him, telling him that it was normal for new parents to feel anxious. But Brandon insisted, stating he wasn’t ready for fatherhood.
Despite Mary’s calm attempts to talk, Brandon became more agitated and yelled that he didn’t want to be a dad. Mary, frustrated, asked if his friends were influencing him, but Brandon responded angrily, saying he didn’t want to waste his life on diapers.
Mary stood firm, refusing to let him make such a decision based on others’ opinions, but Brandon, furious, packed his things and left.
Years later, Mary raised their son happily on her own, while Brandon’s life spiraled into loneliness. His relationships failed, and he spent his weekends alone, thinking about the family he had walked away from.
One day, while sitting in a park, he met a boy who asked him to help retrieve his paper plane. After helping him, Brandon noticed the boy was with Mary. The realization hit him hard. Mary had moved on, and she and her son were happy together.
As he watched them walk away, Brandon regretted leaving her and wished he had made a different choice.
